About Christian Dior

As one of the most influential designers of the post-war era, Christian Dior dominated the fashion world with his 'New Look'. Featuring hourglass silhouettes and billowing skirts, he established Dior as a global brand by developing a new, wider range of products available to consumers.

Christian Dior was born in 1905 in the seaside town of Granville on the Normandy coast in France. Even after moving to Paris in 1910, the family continued to summer there each year. After the war, there was ample opportunity for new business ventures and fashion was no exception. The house of Dior was established and the first show exhibited in Paris in 1947. During the 1950s the house of Dior flourished but tragedy struck in 1957 when Christian Dior died of a heart attack. His successor Yves Saint Laurent remained chief designer until 1960 when Marc Bohan took over and bought a more conservative feel to the brand.

It was in 1996 that luxury goods group LVMH became the new owners of the Dior house appointing John Galliano as the chief creative director.
