Steiff Teddy Bears

The history of Steiff teddy bears dates back to the late 1800s. Founder Margarete Steiff was born in 1847 in Germany, the third of four children. She worked in her sisters’ dressmaking shop part-time until 1877, when she opened her own business selling clothing and household articles. After finding a pattern for a cuddly elephant in a magazine, she decided to make a pincushion based on this design.  The "Elefäntle" proved to be hugely popular as toys for children, and so began the Steiff bears empire.

The original elephants were closely followed by more Steiff animals; cats, dogs, mice, pigs, camels, pigs and rabbits, to mention a few. With their motto "Only the best is good enough for children" helping to pave their way through the luxury toy and gift market, Steiff is now one of the leading suppliers of stuffed animals in the industry.
